SPILL ALBUM REVIEW: SARAH JANE SCOUTEN – TURNED TO GOLD

You just don’t get nominated for 4 Canadian Folk Music Awards, a Western Canadian Music Award and an International Folk Music Award for being simply good. You also don’t get to open for the likes of Martha Wainwright, Ron Sexsmith, and The Sadies just for being good enough.

Through her three previous albums and her latest one, Turned To Gold, Sarah Jane Scouten has proven that she is an excellent songwriter with some subtle and strong vocals.

Yet her latest album is one of those that shows the art of subtlety at its best, where everything is in the detail and complexity of the songwriting and vocal and instrumental presentation – these are the elements that make a song and or a complete album slowly but surely stick into the listeners mind, begging for repeated plays, as many as you can muster.
